Here’s a little bit about Whale & Wasp.
Chad, Janna, Cameron & Larkin Hockenjos
We are a permaculture family. What does that even mean? It means that no matter what we do, we (the kids, the adults & the dog) make our very best attempt to always make sure what we do and choose is good for us, good for Earth, and good for all our neighbors near and far.
It is from this place that Whale & Wasp was born. The ideals of our business and our family are inseparable.
Five years ago, I (Chad) started with the dream of a suburban backyard food forest. Each year we’ve added more plants, eaten more of what we’ve grown, and learned a lot about the plants and about ourselves. It’s a continuing adventure with ups and downs, but it’s way better than the dream.
We’ve learned that is nothing wrong with starting small. When you create one relationship that allows you to live with the land and with each other, so much will grow beautifully from there.
← We’ve all grown since this Costa Rica photo, but it’s a family favorite and a trip that showed us what was possible at our own home.
It is my hope that Whale & Wasp can help you create a place to grow from. I’ve built and designed the garden bed that I know works for my family, the kind of bed that we wish we had from the beginning. It’s kid-tested, family-approved, and bound to grow something good for you for a long, long while.
What begins with garden beds can expand. I am a certified permaculture designer and would love to help you get growing!

Curious about the name…
Whale & Wasp ??
I find Alice & Chains to be some of the best gardening music.
Not only that, but how we garden affects all creatures, and all creatures have a role in the web of life.
